Sierra Bouchard

2nd Grade Class Teacher 2023-24

Sierra is passionate about how Waldorf Education pedagogy strives to develop intellectual, artistic, and practical skills in an integrated and holistic manner as well as for the emphasis on nature-based learning, child development, creativity, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice work. Sierra believes that children’s growth and learning benefits from a life-long relationship with the natural world and that this relationship will promote the values of environmental stewardship that our planet needs.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Waldorf School of Garden City, Garden City, NY.  First Grade Assistant Teacher, working with a master Waldorf teacher
  • Cornell University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Ithaca, NY. B.S. Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, concentration on Youth Development, Engagement, and Education
  • Shady Grove Farm and Wellness Center Inc., Peru, NY. Pioneer, Director, and Lead Counselor of Summer Youth Environmental and Agricultural Camp (children ages 5-12)
  • Ithaca Children’s Garden, Ithaca, NY. Youth Counselor for children ages 6-9 Trained in play-work and nature-play philosophies of teaching and caring for children

Sierra grew up on a small organic farm in the Adirondacks and spent a lot of time caring for the plants and animals. She also spent a lot of time engaging in outdoor recreation in the nearby mountains and lakes, which fostered her love for nature. Before joining the BVWS community, Sierra worked at The Waldorf School of Garden City, Sierra worked as a Youth Counselor at the Ithaca Children’s Garden and as a Soil and Water conservation Intern in the Clinton County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Sierra has a strong athletic ability and knowledge of tennis, softball, soccer, downhill and cross-country skiing. She was on the Cornell University Alpine Ski Team where she helped lead the women’s team to Nationals and worked as their Public Relations chair on the executive board. Sierra has passions for hiking, skiing, swimming, yoga/meditation, animals, cooking, wild plants/mushrooms, singing, dancing, crafting, poetry and the written word.
